About the Course
Classes are held in both Armonk and Scarsdale and consist of seven 1.5- hour sessions. The classes start in early April and continue through the week of the June exam. Class size is limited to 10 students per section. The Chemistry SAT II exam will be given on May 5, 2012, and again on June 2, 2012. Students are required to purchase the two review books shown in the "Required Course Materials" section. Hold off on purchasing the books until the new editions are released for 2012. Tuition for this course is $790.
Format and Content of the Test
The Chemistry SAT II exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions. Students have 60 minutes to complete the exam. The Chemistry Subject Test tests a student's understanding of general chemistry at the college-preparatory level. The Chemistry Subject Test is designed to assess one's understanding of the major concepts of chemistry as well as the ability to apply them in problem-solving scenarios. The test requires the ability to organize and interpret results obtained by observation and experimentation and familiarity with the concepts of ratio, proportions, scientific notation, and exponential functions.
Note: The use of a calculator is not permitted. A periodic table indicating the atomic numbers and masses of elements is provided for all test administrations.
How the Test is Scored
For each correct answer, students are given one point. For each wrong answer, they lose 1/4 of a point--so there is a penalty for guessing. If they omit a question, it is not counted. After all the points are totaled, their paper is given a Raw Score. The Raw Score is then converted to an equivalent College Board score, which ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 800 points.
New SAT Score-Reporting Policy
College Board has approved Score Choice, an important change to the current SAT score-reporting policy. This new policy will give students the option to choose the SAT scores by sitting (test date) and SAT Subject Test scores by individual test that they send to colleges, at no additional cost. This will allow students to put their best foot forward on test day by giving them more flexibility and control over their scores. Score Choice is optional, and if students choose not to use it, all scores will be sent automatically. The new score-reporting feature launched in Spring 2009.
When Should a Student Take the Test?
Most students who are enrolled in a review course or who work with a private tutor opt to register for both the May and June exams. Students tend to approach the May exam as a “practice” test. They can use the next few weeks to continue to study and take practice tests and then they retake the test in June.
Services for Students with Disabilities
Not all students with disabilities require accommodations. Not all students who do require accommodations require the same accommodations. Some accommodations received by students in school are not necessary for the purposes of participating in College Board tests. To ensure that the College Board provides the right accommodations, we require that a student's documentation meet our criteria. We must approve accommodations before a student can take College Board tests.
It is very important that you submit accommodations requests before the deadlines. To receive accommodations for the May exam, all applications and documentation must be submitted to College Board no later than March 16, 2012. Because the review process is thorough, it takes about seven weeks to review a request when documentation is required. In order to get all of the paperwork and possible additional testing complete in time you must act now!!
SSD Online, the College Board’s online system for submitting and managing accommodation requests for students with disabilities, is the fastest and most accurate way to request accommodations for your students.
Access to SSD Online will be through a secure login for which you will need a College Board Educational Professional account. If you don't already have an account with the College Board, create one by going to
http://www.collegeboard.com/profaccount and following the instructions for "Create an Account." Fill out an SSD Coordinator Form and fax it to the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities at 866-360-0114. As soon as the form is processed (usually within 1-2 business days), you will be sent an access code, via email, that will allow you to access the application. When you receive the access code, go to the Education Professionals' Sign-In page and enter your College Board account username and password. For the "Sign In to" field select "Disabilities Accommodation Mgmt" from the drop-down menu. After you sign in, you are prompted to enter the access code you were provided with, which gives you access to the SSD Online application.
